Flavor Profile

Beyond the label

Located in the appellation of Saint-Estèphe, Château Calon-Ségur was classified as a Third Growth in 1855, and is the most northern of the classified châteaux in the Médoc on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. In the 18th century, it was owned by Marquis de Ségur, who also happened to own Latour and Lafite. Legend has it that he once remarked, “I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon.” This quote is believed to have led to the famous heart that appears on the label of Calon-Ségur, which remains a family-owned estate.

The château encompasses 45 hectares of wines, which are on average 22 years of age, and is planted to a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon (56%), Merlot (35%), Cabernet Franc (7%) and Petit Verdot (2%). World-famous critic Robert M. Parker, Jr. has wrote that the château “remains the most faithful to the traditional style of long-lived wines that are slow to evolve and blossom.”

This release comes from the landmark 2016 vintage, which many of the world’s top critics consider one of (if not the) best vintage of the 20th century so far. Just hitting its stride now, this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot was aged for 20 months in new French oak barrels. It has a perfect 100-point score, as well as many other scores in the high 90s from famous critics (see below).

“Pure liquid velvet, sings of restrained elegance. Inky plum in color, full intensity, with decades ahead of it, signature St-Estèphe power and character. 98 points” – Critic Jane Anson
