The rolling hills of Montalcino are home to some of Italy’s finest reds, and very few producers dare to make a 100% Cabernet. Past vintages of this champion beat out bottles that list for double the price—and you have access to the latest release.

The rolling hills of Montalcino are home to some of Italy’s finest reds. While a handful of top estates do grow a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon—to blend with Sangiovese for their Super Tuscan reds—very few make a 100% Cabernet. And you won’t find a better one (or bigger value) than Le Fughe.

It hails from Valeria Vittori’s celebrated Molino di Sant’Antimo estate, a stone’s throw from $200+ Poggio di Sotto. She calls it Le Fughe (‘the refuge’), after the old farmhouse that once overlooked her family’s prized Cabernet vines.

Le Fughe is a perennial, 90+ point favorite of Italian wine expert James Suckling, who raved about a previous edition: “a rich, juicy red with lots of blackberry, blackcurrant, chocolate and walnut character. It’s full and very dense. 91 points.” The 2021 release is equally delicious. While drinking beautifully now, it’ll really come into its own after a few more years in the bottle (2028 and beyond)—if you can stand to wait that long!

This Tuscan treasure is sourced from two special sites, perched at over 800 feet up, and is aged 18 luxurious months in fine oak. Aromas of black currant, cedar and violet unfurl in the glass. Made by a team of talented female winemakers, led by the iconic Pamela Geddes, La Cueva Cabernet Sauvignon hails from Spain’s rugged Campo de Borja. Aged in Bodegas Ruberte’s ancient hand-dug caves, it has complex dark fruit, spice and tobacco notes.

Spain may not be the first country that comes to mind when you’re after a top-quality, great-value Cabernet, but it definitely deserves your attention. There are brilliant Cabs to be found here, and La Cueva Cabernet Sauvignon is one you won’t want to miss.

La Cueva hails from Bodegas Ruberte in Spain’s rugged Campo de Borja. With a winemaking history dating back to 1203, this region is perfectly suited to growing grape vines. Its hot climate allows thick-skinned grapes like Cabernet to ripen fully, while the well-draining soils force vines to bury their roots deep in search of water and nutrients, making for lower yields of more complex grapes.

Once Mother Nature did her work in the vineyards, a team of talented women winemakers took over the cellar. Susana Ruberte, the family’s matriarch, worked alongside her two daughters, Alicia and Ana, and expert winemaker Pamela Geddes (below). Pamela’s decades of experience includes stints at famous estates Penfolds and Torres, and she also makes some of our best-selling Spanish wines.

The team aged the wine in La Cueva, the Bodega family’s ancient cellar. Carved into the mountainside overlooking the town of Borja, the cellar was hand-dug by their ancestors over 500 years ago. Inside its cool, dark caverns, La Cueva Cabernet mellowed to perfection, resulting in an elegant wine with expressive dark fruit, tobacco and peppery spice characters.

Shroud Mountain Reserve is a distinctive Cabernet from Paso Robles—a true hidden gem of California wine country. Located halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, it boasts stunning views, a pioneering spirit and excellent wines—without the bloated pricing of Napa and other big-name districts.

This must-try red is from the historic Margarita Vineyard, which was planted by the legendary Robert Mondavi in the mid-1990s. After harvest, the wine was aged 16 months in neutral and new French oak barrels, which added to the complexity in flavor and texture.

Look forward to inviting aromas of violet, pomegranate, cedar and cocoa. On the palate, enjoy flavors of ripe red plum, blackberry and red currant. Beautifully balanced, integrated tannins line the long finish, making it an excellent match for a meal featuring fine meats, artisanal pastas or aged cheeses. This is a complex, elegant wine that Napa Cab fans would happily enjoy.

P.S. Plus, here's a detail to share with guests as you pour: Shroud Mountain is named for the fog that rolls in off the Pacific Ocean and blankets the local vineyards, helping to cool the vines and create long ripening seasons (which enriches and deepens the flavors in the grapes).
