Beyond the label

When a wine is both delicious and comes with a fun backstory, we can’t resist it. And neither should you—especially when it has international acclaim and was organically grown.

In Spain’s northeast region of Catalunya, the tradition of the castell dates back to the 18th century. These multi-tiered human towers are an impressive display of strength, trust and acrobatic prowess (and are considered such an important part of Spanish tradition, they were named to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list in 2010).

The local castell group in Penedès was founded by winery Oriol Rossel back in the 1940s—and they hold the world record for tallest tower at 10 stories! This barrel-aged Merlot/Syrah blend from winemaker Salvi Moliner is an (organically grown) homage to the team and the sport, named for the triumphant shout made by the top casteller when they reach their precarious place at the apex.

Competition judges have certainly been shouting praise for Aleta. Last vintage, it won a gold medal plus 91 points from the Decanter World Wine Awards. Judges loved its “sweet spice, floral and bramble fruit bouquet. Palate has lots of red fruits, plus a touch of kirsch. A complex, thoroughly modern expression.” The new 2021 release is every bit as impressive—with big wins that include 90 points and a gouble gold medal from Gilbert & Gaillard.

Now, we’re not guaranteeing you or your guests will shout with joy when enjoying a glass of this beauty…but we do guarantee it’ll draw out a smile AND be a winner on your dinner table—particularly if Spanish charcuterie, slow-cooked pork or vegetarian casseroles are on the menu.
