Flavor Profile
Perched high above the clouds in Spain’s Sierra Cantabria Mountains, Altos de Rioja was established in 2006 when Château Haut-Brion-trained winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua decided to venture out of Bordeaux to explore the vineyards of his mother’s homeland.
Since then, the estate has produced a series of complex yet approachable, contemporary Spanish reds crafted with French Grand Cru Classé standards in mind—and in doing so, has become Rioja’s most awarded cellar (300+ medals) and has earned the title of Rioja’s Best Winery at the International Wine & Spirit Competition.
A decade in the making, this bottle may be their most anticipated release to date.
Crafted from carefully selected, old-vine Tempranillo aged two years in American and French oak barrels, Altos de Rioja Selección de Familia 2014 delivers a mélange of mellow black fruit flavors that feel wonderfully youthful alongside toasty notes of wood spice—a beautiful example of how Rioja evolves over time.
“This special red has been tucked away in our cellar for over a decade…I’m thrilled to finally share it with you. Good things come to those who wait,” says Jean-Marc.
