Flavor Profile

The Wine

Touriga Nacional is one of Portugal’s finest red grapes, famous for its starring role in fortified Port and the dry reds of the Douro Valley. It’s rare to see it grown outside of its homeland—but that’s what makes this new discovery so exciting. Avera showcases how Touriga Nacional thrives in sunny California.

The winemaking team sourced the grapes from Lodi, “one of the top wine regions in the country,” where winemakers “have quietly started producing some of the state’s best wines” (vinepair.com). Here, the warm climate is tempered by morning fog, helping prolong the grapes’ ‘hang time’ on the vine for extra-concentrated flavors. Judges at the Sunset International Wine Competition were so impressed, they awarded it 92 points and a gold medal.

You’re in for layers of luscious blueberry, blackberry and bittersweet cocoa plus hints of mint. Bold and smooth, this full-bodied red can stand up to a hearty meal, from beef stroganoff to traditional Portuguese bacalao.
