Flavor Profile
From the age of four, Tomasso Ciampoli would help his grandfather craft a wine that was proudly sipped at every family celebration. When Tomasso visited the high-altitude village of Alpera and saw its gnarled, ancient bush vines, he was inspired to set up shop and revive his family’s winemaking traditions.
With just one taste of his intense, pure and red-fruited Cala Rey Tinto, you’ll see that Tomasso’s venture is so much more than a passion project. The previous vintage of his Tempranillo-Syrah was rewarded with a gold medal from Berliner Wein Trophy, and we expect this brand-new release to follow suit.
Cala Rey Tinto hails from Castilla La Mancha—Spain’s biggest wine region, located south and southeast of Madrid. La Mancha itself is perhaps more familiar to many as the setting of Miguel de Cervantes’ early classic, Don Quixote, and the later musical it inspired, called Man of La Mancha. Home to castles, windmills and vineyards, the broad, flat plains are covered in low bush vines, which are carefully pruned to protect grapes from the extreme heat. In fact, ‘Manxa’ means ‘parched earth’ in Arabic (the ancient Moors had a big influence here). Temperatures reach a scorching 104˚ in summer, then drop to 32˚ during the long, cold winters.
Cala Rey Tinto offers ripe red- and black-fruit aromas, and on the palate, it’s smooth and silky, brimming with juicy raspberry, strawberry and blueberry. Round and textured, with a hint of chocolate on the finish, it’ll make a fine match for classic Spanish tapas, roasted pork or a plate of Iberico ham and Manchego cheese.
