Flavor Profile
Lithe, citrus-charged and beautifully aromatic, Albariño is a classic summer wine that’s fast becoming the white to order in trendsetting wine bars around the world. Like Denmark. That’s where Cape Song Albariño was originally destined before the order was cancelled. Bad form, of course, but it’s your good fortune.
Cape Song comes courtesy of the Spier Estate. This historic property dates back to 1692, when Arnoud Jansz planted its first vines. Today, Spier Estate is one of the country’s most acclaimed estates—with 1,839 awards and counting—including two ‘South African Wine Producer of the Year’ trophies plus an ‘Ethical Company of the Year’ title from The Drinks Business’ Green Awards.
Spier Estate lies in the Stellenbosch region, which is often called South Africa’s answer to the Napa Valley. As Master of Wine Tim Atkin writes, “Stellenbosch consistently produces the greatest number of the Cape’s finest wines.” So, it should come as no surprise that the quality of this Albariño is top notch.
In the glass, look forward to bright lemon, ripe peach and nectarine flavors, plus hints of salinity. It’s a lovely white wine to sip on its own, but it also pairs well with everything from lobster rolls to chicken piccata.
Thanks to the cancelled order, our friends at the Spier Estate offered it to us at a great price, which we’re happy to pass on to you. It’s Cape Albarinõ for a song.
