Beyond the label

Bordeaux is France’s most famous region, and some of its finest wines come from the storied Saint-Émilion district. We’re thrilled to bring you an elegant taste from our friend (and third generation winemaker), Marie Claude Fanon and her family estate, Château Despagnet.

Marie’s grandfather planted vines at Château Despagnet back in 1918. Since then, winemaking has been a true family affair. Marie grew up working in the vineyards, which her family has always farmed without the use of chemicals to keep the soil pure. Today, Marie is in charge of winemaking, and she had her pick of top-notch grapes for this 2020 release...

As you’ve likely heard, critics worldwide are raving about Bordeaux’s 2020 vintage. Expert James Suckling notes that there’s “an outstanding quality level from first growths to petit chateaux.” He particularly raves about the Merlot: “It seems to be a Merlot vintage to me, if I take into consideration the superb quality of wines made in appellations on the Right Bank such as Pomerol and Saint-Émilion.”

And Château Despagnet is a classic blend of Merlot (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). Rounded and generous, it has ripe red raspberry and black currant flavors, with smooth tannins and a long, vibrant finish. A great choice for beef, lamb, risottos and more.

This is exactly the kind of boutique, glory-vintage Bordeaux we love to help you discover. Secure your share today.
