Our intrepid expert stumbled on this old-vine Nero d’Avola when he entered the gates of Sicily’s “lost village of the vines” (you will not believe how decadent it is for the price). Expect plush dark cherry and sweet spice notes.

Beyond the label

Our Italy expert found Tenuta Fenice (‘house of the phoenix’) rising from the rubble of Sicily’s Poggioreale village. This super-rich Sicilian red represents the rebirth of a historic family estate and some of the island’s oldest vines. And you have exclusive U.S. access.

In 1968, a devastating earthquake destroyed Poggioreale, forcing residents to flee and winemakers to abandon their vines. Now, Dino Taschetta (below) has returned to his family estate and reignited its legacy with this gorgeous Nero d’Avola. All Dino needed was the right partner to help him share his masterpiece—that’s where we came in.

Made from Dino’s ancient, low-yielding vines, Tenuta Fenice is a classic Nero d’Avola (Sicily’s flagship red grape). Expect richly perfumed aromas, layer after layer of vibrant dark cherry and blackberry fruit, sweet spices, hints of licorice and a deeply satisfying intensity that only seriously old vines can deliver.

Nero d’Avola has skyrocketed in popularity, and the top bottles can command $30+ each. With Tenuta Fenice, you’re getting an amazing deal (under $20 a bottle) and helping rescue a special plot of ancient vines. Stock up while you can, and enjoy with Dino’s thanks!
