Beyond the label

Theodora Lee was the first female Black vineyard owner in Northern California and now you can taste her acclaimed, boutique red.

Theodora was already well into her career as a successful trial lawyer when she founded Theopolis Vineyards. She took viticulture classes at UC Davis on the side and chose a unique site in Mendocino County’s Yorkville Highlands. She determined the steep slopes and soil were perfect for Petite Sirah, a grape loved for its dark character and exceptional richness.

She quickly earned a formidable reputation. Famed actress Diahann Carroll nicknamed her “Theo-Patra, Queen of Vineyards” and her wines earned critical acclaim from top critics and competitions. Theo-Patra’s Cerise Cuvée is no different, boasting two medal wins in San Francisco and a gold medal from the 2023 Boston Wine Competition. It also earned 91 points from renowned critic James Suckling, who wrote this tasting note: “Aromas of raspberries and mulberries with hibiscus and ground spice undertones. Medium- to full-bodied and juicy with vivid acidity and chalky tannins. Hints of spices and wet earth at the end.”

The sumptuous blend showcases her signature Petite Sirah, plus Mourvèdre, Syrah and Grenache, aged for 10 months in French oak barrels. Expect a bouquet of blackberry, dried violets, leather, and spice, while the bright and juicy palate offers muddled blueberries, peppery spice and a long, lively finish.

Theodora suggests a pairing of smoked turkey, grilled veggies and meat, plus comforting braises and stews. Whatever you plan on serving it with, don’t delay…
