Beyond the label

Legendary winemaker José Neiva (below) isn’t one to rest on his many laurels. (Which, by the way, includes the International Wine Challenge’s coveted Red Wine of the Year trophy.) He’s always innovating, always pushing himself to craft the best possible wines, even if they don’t follow tradition.

Take Vale de Rosas Pinot Noir. You don’t see a lot of Pinot Noir grown in Portugal, but José knew this famous red grape variety would thrive on his property. So, he planted vines around his family home and now tends one of the largest Pinot Noir vineyards on the Iberian peninsula.

Inspired by his wife’s rose garden, which he drives by on his way to the vineyard, Vale de Rosas is an elegant, fresh Pinot Noir with ripe red berry flavors. It’ll make a lovely aperitif (especially when lightly chilled) or pair well with a variety of foods from roasted chicken to hearty chilli and grilled flatbreads.
